Santa Rosa : Santa Rosa Island is about 46 miles from Ventura Harbor and travel time is about 2.5 -3 hours sometimes with a brief stop to drop off or pick up passengers at Santa Cruz Island. When traveling to Santa Rosa, Island Packers will often travel on the south side of the scenic Santa Cruz Island coastline. Returning from Santa Rosa you will travel along the north side of Santa Cruz and view the Painted Cave, a large sea cave on the western end of the island. To land on Santa Rosa Island visitors must step from the boat to a ladder and climb a number of narrow ladder rungs to reach the top of a pier. The pier was once used for the famous Vail and Vickers cattle ranch that operated for one hundred years on Santa Rosa Island. The rustic ranch buildings can be seen but you may not tour these structures as the Vail Vickers Company through the year 2011 currently leases them for private use.
